20 governors beneath fireplace for delaying N70,000 minimal wage


The Nationwide President of the Nigeria Union of Native Authorities Workers (NULGE), Alhaji Haruna Kankara, has revealed that about 20 states are but to implement the N70,000 new minimal wage for native authorities employees and first faculty academics.

These states embrace Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Borno and 11 others.

The NULGE chief disclosed this in response to questions from Punch on the implementation of the brand new minimal wage as regards to the LG employees and first faculty academics within the nation.

Following the signing of the Minimal Wage Act, 2024 into regulation, about 20 states commenced the implementation of the brand new wage regulation.

The states included Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Niger, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Jigawa, Gombe, Ogun, Kebbi, Ondo, Kogi and others.

President Bola Tinubu signed the N70,000 minimal wage invoice into regulation on July 29, 2024, after months of negotiations with labour unions.

The brand new month-to-month minimal wage was raised by 133 p.c from N30,000 to N70,000, amid the financial hardship within the nation.

Giving an replace on the implementation of the regulation, Kankara mentioned, “We actually have the problem of so many states, like about 20 that haven’t began implementing the brand new minimal wage.

“We’ve states like Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Imo, Ebonyi, Borno, Cross Rivers, FCT Abuja, amongst others. Some have began paying the state employees leaving out the native authorities employees and first faculty academics however now we have continued to have interaction and plead with them to do the needful for these employees.

On the implementation of the LG autonomy, the NULGE chief defined that the Central Financial institution has but to speak with the councils on the opening of financial institution accounts.
