The World Bank is working to bridge the digital divide using digital solutions to connect the 2.6 billion people who remain offline.
The recent second annual Global Digital Summit brought together public and private leaders to build on the Bank’s 80-year track record of improving access.
In a statement posted on its website on Saturday, details were given of the Global Challenges for Accelerating Digitalization, an initiative that aims to accelerate
The program’s digital public infrastructure – IDs, payments, data platforms – connects people to work, banking, healthcare and education using reliable systems. It also supports cross-border digital markets and encourages the private sector through common rules.
A new initiative funded by the Gates Foundation through the Partnership for Digital Development aims to provide affordable connectivity and digital skills to women in poorer countries. It supports the bank’s goal of connecting an additional 300 million women to broadband by 2030.
“Digital transformation is one of the greatest opportunities of our time to drive growth and inclusion, especially at a time when development is at a critical inflection point,” said Sangbu Kim, World Bank Vice President for Digital Transformation.
