Steve Diamond: Rugby disciplinary system “is flawed” says Newcastle boss after ban


Newcastle Falcons advisor director of rugby Steve Diamond says the game’s disciplinary course of “is flawed” as he begins a six-match ban towards Northampton Saints on Friday.

Diamond, 56, was given the suspension for abusing match officers on the finish of a 17-15 defeat at Exeter Chiefs on 29 March.

He was upset about Exeter’s match-winning attempt within the final minute being awarded and angrily confronted the officers after the sport.

Diamond admitted the cost, describing the incident as a “big mistake”, however says extra skilled officers could also be wanted.

He mentioned: “There’s an issue with the disciplinary system, not an issue with the referees. There’s solely folks like me ready to say issues about it, however it’s not the primary time this stuff have occurred.

“I’ve received a six-week ban for saying an inappropriate remark – which I’ve apologised for – to knowledgeable referee in full privateness.
