Security Alert: Violence Erupts in Aso Community Near Abuja After Grazing Dispute (Video)

Residents of Aso community in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State were thrown into panic on Wednesday morning, March 25, 2026, following a violent raid by suspected gunmen. The community, located near the Maraba/Masaka axis and just a few kilometers from the Federal Capital Territory, saw houses and vehicles set ablaze as families fled for safety.

The incident has caused significant disruption in the area, particularly around the local primary school, where thick smoke from burning structures was seen billowing into the sky.

What Triggered the Attack?

While official police reports are still being finalized, accounts from the scene indicate that the violence was a reprisal following a deadly dispute the previous day. On Tuesday, March 24, a clash reportedly broke out over a grazing disagreement, which allegedly resulted in the death of a Fulani herder.

By Wednesday morning, armed men moved through the Aso A area, targeting residences and property. Some reports suggest the initial dispute involved a confrontation between a mobile police officer and a herder who had allegedly trespassed into a residential compound to feed his cattle, leading to a fatal shooting that sparked the larger reprisal.

The Current Situation

As of midday Wednesday:

  • Casualties: There are no officially confirmed deaths from the Wednesday morning raid, though at least three people were reportedly killed in the initial clashes over the last 24 hours.
  • Suspects: Local residents managed to apprehend at least one individual suspected of participating in the raid.
  • Security Response: While the Nasarawa State Police Command has acknowledged the tension in the Karu axis, a full-scale tactical deployment is still being coordinated to restore lasting peace to the community.

A Growing Concern for Abuja Suburbs

The Karu LGA serves as a major residential hub for thousands of people who work in Abuja. This latest surge in violence highlights the fragile security situation in the “border towns” between Nasarawa and the FCT. Similar clashes over grazing rights and land use have been a recurring issue in the region, leading to calls for a more permanent security presence in the Maraba and Nyanya corridors.

Residents are currently being advised to avoid the Aso A area and the vicinity of the Maraba/Masaka primary school until security agencies give a “clear” signal.
